Northern Virginia is often associated with traffic, major military bases, or large-scale malls. What most people might not know is that Northern Virginia is also home to incredible historical and national treasures. We’ve put together a list of great day-trip destinations across the region that you might not know about.
Great Falls National Park: Great Falls National Park is an 800-acre park along the Potomac River just 15 minutes from Washington, D.C. in Fairfax County. This incredible destination is rooted in a deep history as a trading spot for the Piscataway, Powhatan Confederacy, and the Iroquois Nation. The change in elevation and narrow Mather Gorge create a spectacular waterfall that visitors come to admire year-round. There are over 15 miles of hiking trails, five miles of bike trails, horseback riding, fishing spots, and more.
Mount Vernon: Built in 1734 and inherited by George Washington in 1761, Mount Vernon is the estate home of the first President of the United States of America. There is something for everyone at Mount Vernon including museums, gardens, children’s activities, restaurants, and even a distillery. Located along the bank of the Potomac River south of Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon is one of the most visited homes in the country with an annual visitation of over 1 million.
Skyline Caverns: Located in Front Royal about an hour away from Washington, D.C., Skyline Caverns has everything to offer. The caverns themselves are among the best in the Shenandoah Valley with natural formations that defy gravity and an underground waterfall. There are a lot of activities for children including a maze, miniature train, and more.
Loudoun County: Just 25 miles away from Washington, D.C., Loudoun County is a mix of urban and rural. With over 40 wineries, 30 craft breweries, luxurious resorts, and small towns, Loudoun County provides visitors with a lot of options. There is something for outdoor enthusiasts, foodies, beer and wine aficionados, and history buffs alike.
