Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Apartment Home

Spring officially begins on March 19th which means that it is time for that age-old tradition of spring cleaning. Most of us dread spring cleaning but there are actually a lot of benefits to refreshing your home after the cold winter months. Research has shown that deep cleaning and decluttering not only has physical health benefits but mental health benefits as well. To help you get started, we’ve put together a list of the top things you should do when tackling your apartment home spring cleaning.

Make a Schedule

The first thing is don’t procrastinate! Schedule a weekend when you want to clean and stick with it. Scheduling your spring cleaning is one of the most important things that you can do because it forces you to set aside the time. If you can’t commit to an entire weekend, break it up by scheduling out your cleaning on a room by room basis.

Take an Inventory

Creating an inventory of every room will help you when it comes time to clean. When making that inventory, be sure to ask yourself whether or not you need to keep certain items. Over the years, we all accumulate stuff. The question we need to ask ourselves is if that stuff provides any value to our day-to-day lives. A good rule of thumb is that you can probably dispose or donate between 5-15 percent of your personal items from each room in your apartment home.

You should also make an inventory of the new items that you might need. Small things like plastic shower liners don’t have a long lifespan so replacing them each year is a smart decision. There are a host of small things around our homes that should be replaced every year (if not sooner) like vacuum cleaner filters and cleaning supplies.

Use the Top to Bottom Approach

When cleaning, be sure to start from the top and work your way down. Dust and cobwebs can accumulate in ceiling corners, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and on the wall so starting from the top of each room will ensure you don’t have to go over surfaces twice. Make sure you have plenty of clean rags because dust accumulates the most during the winter months.

Clean the Interior of Cabinets

We don’t often think about it but shelves in cabinets can get dusty and dirty as well. Be sure to clean the interior of all your cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms. You can use a very light mixture of soap and water to ensure that everything is sanitized.
