Spring DIY Project: Container Gardens

We love a good DIY project, and nothing says spring quite like adding some greenery to your apartment. In fact, a recent blog post about spring trends highlighted the importance of bringing the outdoors in. One of our favorite options is creating container gardens!

Whether on your balcony, patio, or inside your apartment home, container gardens are perfect for any size apartment. You can plant fun flowers or delicious herbs. They’re so versatile and fun to make. Container gardens are really the perfect spring DIY project.

Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry, we’re here to help! Creating and maintaining container gardens can be easy and a lot of fun.

Here are four steps you need to build and cultivate your very own container gardens:

Step 1: Decide Where It Goes

It’s important to choose a spot in your apartment that gets lots of light. During warmer months, outdoor spaces, such as balconies and patios are great choices. You also could set up a table near a large window or sliding glass door that gets lots of light. Here’s a tip: Think vertical. Hanging planters and shelves near larger windows can give you even more space!

Step 2: Plan What to Grow

Before you begin planting, give some thought to what you want to grow in your container gardens. Herbs typically work best because they don’t take up much space and are so versatile. Consider basil, sage, thyme, cilantro, and mint. Red and green cabbage, as well as tomatoes, can work too.

Step 3: Get the Materials

Once you’ve got your location and know what you want to plant, it’s time to gather the tools and materials you’ll need. Food52 has some great tips for getting started and choosing the right materials. Here’s another tip: Don’t forget to get high-quality soil. It can make a big difference!

Step 4: Build It

Now that you’ve got everything, you can build your container garden. How adventurous you want to be is up to you. If you’re new to gardening or want a low-maintenance approach, you can buy containers and small pots at local hardware stores or garden nurseries.
