As the end of February approaches, we’re stuck in the winter doldrums. It’s tough to stay active in winter when cuddling under a warm blanket and binge-watching TV seems so much more appealing.
Don’t despair, though! There are lots of great ways to stay active in winter and we’ve got five ideas that will help you maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, especially as we get closer to spring.
Visit the Fitness Center
One of the easiest ways to stay active is convenient and doesn’t even require spending much time outdoors… simply a brief walk from your apartment. All our apartment communities feature state-of-the-art Fitness Centers or our Adrenaline Cardio and Strength Studios. Take advantage of this great amenity, which is located on-site at your community. Enjoy a variety of equipment that allows you to exercise at your pace. Plus, many of our communities feature fitness on-demand so you can take virtual fitness classes on your schedule.
Enjoy the Sunshine
Although it’s still chilly, many days in February and March feature at least a few hours of sunshine. Bundle up with a couple layers of clothes and go for a walk. With the appropriate attire, you’ll stay cozy warm and can be active at the same time. Our communities feature walking trails and beautiful natural settings, so you don’t have to venture far to enjoy some sun and experience nature, even if it’s cold outside.
Take the Stairs
Making small changes to your daily habit can be a great way to stay active during colder and darker winter months. A perfect example is taking the stairs instead of opting for an elevator or escalator. The extra movement will keep your muscles working. Plus, stair climbing is an awesome workout that burns fat and helps your heart.
Even if the weather is nasty, there are tons of indoor activities to keep you moving during winter. Aside from taking the stairs, the American Heart Association also recommends dancing, mall walking, bowling, and yoga. Have some fun and stay active at the same time, all in a climate-controlled setting!
Team Up with a Friend
Sometimes the hardest part of staying active is getting motivated. That’s why we love these two ideas from the Today Show. Consider exercising with a partner and planning ahead. Exercising with someone else will keep you accountable and could give you the extra push you need. Plus, if you plan ahead for exercise, you’ll be more likely to see it through because you’re making a commitment to yourself and prioritizing your wellbeing.
